Age 50+ Senior Activities Class
There is a wide variety of sport and recreational activities available to try out and enjoy; run at Queen's Park Health and Fitness, Boundary Road, St Helens on Fridays from 1.00 p.m. until 3.00 p.m.
Cost is just £1 (or free to Go Active members) and activities include Boccia, New Age Curling, Badminton, Target Golf / Putting, Dance, Tai Chi, Basketball, Multi Movement Skills, Self Defence, Table Tennis and Nordic Walking

metre x 6 lane Main Pool and a 6m x 13m Teaching Area. The new roof for the
adjacent teaching pool is expected to be completed by September 2012.

Reminder: Log your voluntary hours!
A note to all volunteers that help out within clubs! Whether you are the
secretary, the kit man, the web editor or one of the many other titles
people assume to help out clubs, log your volunteering hours with the
District Sports Council Destination 500 scheme. Feel a sense of achievement
through regular milestone certificates and presentation evenings. To log

District Sports Council (DSC)
We would like to remind clubs that free membership to the District Sports
Council is still available. Apply online now. For current members, the next
meeting is scheduled for Thursday 22nd March 2012. At this meeting, David
Boocock, Head of Sports Development Services, will discuss the new
“Creating a Sporting Habit for Life” strategy and the very latest funding
opportunities.
DSC Bursary Award Scheme
Applications for a bursary of up to £100 are available to individual sports
persons to help with costs associated with competing. Applications close on
29th February 2012. Download the application form now!
St Helens School Games Update
The St Helens Aviva Sportshall Secondary Athletics Championships for Y7 &
Y8 pupils is to be held on Thursday February 2nd at The Sutton Academy /
Sutton Leisure Centre with all our local high schools represented. The top
schools will progress to the Merseyside Championships in March.
Congratulations to The Sutton Academy, Hope Academy and Rainford High
Technology College on progressing through to represent St Helens in the
Merseyside County Round of the National Schools Badminton Championships!
Girls and boys will compete on Friday 3rd and Friday 10th February
respectively, and these are set to be brilliant days of high quality
badminton. Both events will be held at the newly renovated Broadway
Badminton Centre in St Helens and is a fantastic opportunity for
participants to play in a sports hall purpose built for badminton.
Merseyside School Games Summer Festival 2012 has now been confirmed as
being held on Friday July 6th at Wavertree Sports Complex, Liverpool. For

Creating a Sporting Habit for Life
Sport England and Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt recently provided details
of a new five year youth and community sport strategy that will deliver on
Lord Coe’s 2012 Games bid promise to inspire a generation to get involved
in sport. Read the strategy here.
Team 53
Team 53 is currently recruiting for the next team start date of 30th
January 2012. This is a 12-week personal development course, offering work
experience, qualifications, practical skills, community projects and a
residential week. Organised by the Princes Trust, this course could help
transform the life of a young person you know. Further information can be

Jogging At Your Own Pace
A friendly, sociable ladies only jogging group. Using a combination of walking and jogging to build up fitness and stamina levels. This activity is suitable for all, including beginners and those returning to running. Sessions are led by qualified instructors. Venue: Queens Park Health and Fitness, Boundary Road, St.Helens. Schedule: Every Tuesday until 18 December 2012. Start: 5.30pm Finish: 6.15pm. Free admission. Aimed at ladies 16 and over.

St Helens Council Sport Development E-News letter December Edition
Sport Club Conference 7th December 2011 - “best conference Ever”
This Event was our best conference to date and a “very successful night for all clubs who attended”. There were over 40 of our local clubs represented bringing over 50 attendees. On half of the sports development team I would like to say thanks to everybody for attending and making the evening such a success.
Upcoming Coach Education courses
Sports Development are pleased to continue to offer an array of courses at subsidised rates to local residents. Over the coming months the following courses are scheduled and places are still available
1. HSE Emergency 1st Aid (Sport Related)- 28th January 9-4pm Ruskin Drive
A basic first aid training course geared towards dealing with sport-related incidents. This is a health and safety executive Certified course and a must for anyone involved with sport. (* £30 for non-residents)
2. Safeguarding & Protecting Children- Monday 30th January 6-9pm Town Hall
This workshop will help coaches to recognise signs of abuse and poor practice, and deal sensitively with issues that may arise. It also prompts a review of coaching practice to ensure that sport provides a positive and enriching experience for children. This course is a ‘must’ for all coaches.
3. Equity In Your Coaching- Monday 27th February 6-9pm Town Hall
This workshop is aimed at all coaches who wish to ensure that their coaching practices are fair and equitable and to raise coach’s awareness as to the barriers that participants may face. This course is a must for all coaches for club accreditation.
4. FUNdamentals of Movement - Monday 26th March 6-9pm
This practical workshop explores the concepts of Agility, Balance, Co-ordination and speed (ABCs). This can help coaches to observe, analyse and coach good movement patterns within sport-specific environments. This course was voted the best course in our previous Coach Education package by candidates who attended.
Places on either course are just £10 for St Helens residents and coaches who work with a resident club and £25 for non-residents (unless otherwise stated*). Inspired facilities- Clubs Gain £50k in Funding
Congratulations to the Club who has received a £50,000 conditional offer of funding, sports development will be working with the club in the coming months to help them complete the project. We would be keen to speak to any other clubs who have been successful , but also those who have received rejects so we can learn form both to support future applications from the borough's clubs. St Helens ‘School Games’ Competitions Start
St Helens Sports Development Team, Rainhill High School Media Arts College and Lansbury Bridge School and Sports College are working in partnership using the power of the Olympics to help schools build on and complement the successful work they have been doing and help put competitive sport at the core of a truly rounded education for all young people.
The St. Helens Aviva Sportshall Primary Athletics Championships launched the School Games Level 2 programme in St Helens on 21st November.
Legh Vale Primary School scooped the top trophy in the St. Helens ‘School Games’ competition held at The Sutton Academy. Runners up were Bleak Hill Primary with Rainhill St. Ann’s taking third place honours. The top two schools now qualify to represent St Helens in the ' School Games' Level 3 Merseyside Final to be held in March 2012.
More than 17 schools took part in the event with 423 pupils competing. It was organised by St.Helens Council’s sports development team in partnership with Aviva Sportshall, The Sutton Academy and its student volunteers and St Helens Sutton Athletics Club.
Councillor Eric Smith, Cabinet Member for Culture said: “This was a very successful event with everyone showing true sporting spirit. Organisers gave their all and the young sports stars really shone.”
St Helens has also seen Level 2 competitions in Y7-11 Rugby League, Basketball, Netball and Badminton leading to schools qualifying for Level 3 County and Regional events. Lansbury Bridge also hosted and organised a very successful Randstad Merseyside Disability Sportshall Athletics Championships during November.
